The Golden Circle with a Snowmobile or an Ice Cave

A Golden Circle day with a glacier adds an hour on Langjökull, the glacier inland from Gullfoss. For the snowmobile ride on the classic loop, book ICELANDIA’s From Reykjavik: Golden Circle and Glacier Snowmobiling, from US$329 a person (checked November 2026): Thingvellir and Geysir, a 1-hour guided ride on Langjökull, two to a snowmobile, and Gullfoss on the way back, in 10 hours from the BSÍ Bus Terminal. The ride depends on the glacier, and it can be called off after you have left Reykjavik.

What the hour on the ice is

All three snowmobile tours give an hour on the machine, behind a guide, usually two to a snowmobile. ICELANDIA’s says no experience is needed and supplies protective clothing and safety gear; Snowmobile.is lists overalls, a balaclava, ski goggles, gloves and a helmet. The person driving needs a licence: ICELANDIA’s asks you to bring one, Snowmobile.is requires a valid driving licence to operate the snowmobile, and Mountaineers of Iceland requires one plus an age of 18. The youngest allowed are 5 on ICELANDIA’s, 6, as passengers, on Mountaineers of Iceland’s, and 8 on Snowmobile.is'.

If you want to drive alone, ICELANDIA sells a single-rider option, and Mountaineers of Iceland offers a solo rider for an extra cost.

When the glacier says no

It is the glacier part that the weather can cancel. Here is each tour’s own wording:

• ICELANDIA: “The operation of the tour depends on the conditions of the glacier.” The ride “might be canceled after departure from Reykjavík. If the tour is cancelled due to weather you will receive a full refund.”
• Snowmobile.is: snowmobiling “is subject to weather conditions and may be canceled for safety reasons. In this case you can select a reschedule or refund option.”
• Sleipnir Glacier Tours Iceland: “Ice cave visits depend on glacier and weather conditions and may change, even after departure.” If the truck tour is cancelled the day before you get a new date or a full refund; “If cancelled after departure, a partial refund applies.”
• Mountaineers of Iceland: “If we’re forced to cancel (e.g. due to weather) and you can’t reschedule, a full refund will be provided.”

What differs is a cancellation on the day: ICELANDIA refunds in full when the weather is the reason, Snowmobile.is lets you choose a new date or a refund, and Sleipnir refunds only part of the price once you have left.

The ice cave day

Sleipnir Glacier Tours Iceland's day is different. The Golden Circle part runs in a small bus with a driver-guide who talks on the road, and you explore Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss on your own. At Gullfoss you change to the Sleipnir monster truck, which drives up through the highlands and onto Langjökull, where the guide takes you into an ice cave. It suggests a packed lunch, so that you have more time at Geysir. The cave walk is moderate, with uneven ground and narrow steps.

Driving yourself to the glacier

Mountaineers of Iceland's tour from Gullfoss is for people with a car. It starts at the Gullfoss Café car park, takes you by truck to its Geldingafell base camp, and gives an hour on a double-rider snowmobile, 4 hours in all. One adult has to be booked for each child or teen, as they cannot drive. Pets are not allowed. Self-drive or tour covers the rest of the loop by car.
